My oldest child was diagnosed with dyslexia when school returned from the pandemic. Her performance on state assessments went from above average to
Very easy phone interview
Nice people over all and nice facilities. I’m sure this place has helped lots of families. There have been some not ok experiences from my perspective. First off, they had my last name wrong even though I wrote it correctly on the initial paperwork. Dr. Denton did a lot of talking during our appointments, but not enough listening. It felt like I was being preached to about ADHD when I didn’t need to be. I don’t feel satisfied with how the medicine worked. Yes it helped some, but my children suffered from unpleasant symptoms from the stimulant and the answer was to just prescribe another medication. Which did not sit well with me, because I did not feel heard in our session. Another thing, we were charged a cancellation fee when my son had the flu. The appointment was on a Monday and he got sick over the weekend. Exactly how was I going to call and cancel/reschedule an appointment on a weekend? He legitimately was sick. At our last appointment my son was picking out a prize from the prize box and a receptionist/nurse tripped over him, kicking him lightly on the back. An honest mistake, but sent up red flags in my mind regarding safety. What if my son ended up getting hurt or the worker hurt herself? The final straw was the bill of $513 that showed up in our mail. Probably an insurance issue on our end, but there needs to be more transparency when it comes to expected cost. That is an issue that is likely out of their hands, but is overwhelmingly expensive for the quality of service we recieved.
Very friendly
What I love about Alabama Game Changers is their consistent yes to Jesus and their crazy faith. We can all learn so much more when we believe we can!!
Update: Make sure your child isn't having sezuires absence sezuires . They say they have a medical evaluation previously with someone in the office. The NP said I think she is having sezuires have your PCP order an EEG. Not sure why we were told an $650.00 dollar test would be needed. If your medical you should have know these sezuires mimic ADD and dyslexia. Instead they play your emotions have you pay to have an unnecessary test to be preformed btw that could be covered by insurance! They again fail to tell you upfront if it’s something like sezuries which in our case was the issue! I would say as far diagnosis my PCP diagnosed my child with ADD. However ,we found other options through AGC that made her not so zombie. I am not familiar with dyslexia we have learned along the way. That being said they diagnosed her , but sadly couldn’t help us. So, with dyslexia it’s a learning disability not medical issue insurance pays NOTHING.So, they refer you over to the NOW program to help with educational gaps. The program works from the reviews seen. However sadly if you’re middle class and not a homeschooler the program isn’t available. It’s a tutoring service that monthly cost1,600 dollar program Monday - Friday 8:00-5:00 your child must attend in person 5 days a week. From my understanding taught by a someone trained without a college degree.(Not that a degree matters or not for me though it mattered to be educated in a specialized educational program)It also has months of a wait time as a child has to graduate out the program. Nothing bad my child needed tutoring ASAP. I couldn’t stand watching the gap get wider. The program obviously isn’t accessible and they don’t have other recommendations as to where or what to do. (I was told it was for me to find) Like the NOW rep said though if you want the best it cost. That Dr.Conway had to do a lot of studies/research and still covering the out of pocket cost of the NOW program. It’s just so sad we can’t get the average kids the help. I understand nothing is free , but don’t recommend a program obviously not available for everyone. Thankfully, I called a lot of programs , people and the school district. Here is facts that can hopefully help someone like our family navigate this. You must get the diagnosis. Orton Gillingham has been around forever for dyslexic student and effective. If your child has a tier program and they are going to extra resource classes to bridge gaps. Alabama ONLY approved scientific evidence 4 programs to be successful for dyslexic children. Take flight Basic Language Skills Phonics 1rst Spire(must be taught an hour 5 days a week) Make sure they are being taught by a Certified Academic Langue Instructor. Also that they are getting the time needed for the program to work. Make sure you have a 504 plan and fight for a IEP! With a dyslexic diagnosis IEP means the school will test your child and if they deem them dyslexic with a MD diagnosis. They cover the cost and accommodations. (Please look up your states rights as some may differ) BTW a trained and degreed tutor is in Chelsea, AL that tutors with the Orton Gillingham curriculum .She is affordable and has really high reviews. Play place is the center she is at currently with openings. I love Alabama Game Changers as we got real results and made us aware of the diagnosis. They truly understood where and what we are struggling with right now. They are great moral support to our needs. They also can help with medical diagnosis and children with ADD.❤️ ALWAYS BE THE ADVOCATE FOR YOU CHILD❤️
