A picture is worth a thousand words.

I came to this office to gather information on how I could start my process to be supported as an autistic individual and I spoke to Michael, who was actually very friendly, A simple response , and accurate response that I would need a psych evaluation and the correct insurance was avoided and instead Michael led a conversation to find out my issues i’ve had with autism. He proceeded to tell me that i did not qualify to get help. Michael then proceeded to tell me that people with autism tend to struggle with things such as being on time to work, I then proceeded to say that in my past history of work I have struggled with being on time. These are one of the symptoms I’ve dealt with autism, trying to show that I did qualify for help with autism because I assumed he had a say so on if I could start my services there. That same day, I wrapped up the conversation because I was getting from him that I didn’t qualify , so I left and I spoke to my peer supporter and I let her know that I was told by Michael , that I did not qualify for help at this place. She then called him a couple weeks later and had a conversation with Michael , and he proceeds to tell her that I have to go through certain Insurance steps and that he was going to offer me a job but I told him I wouldn’t be on time. The reason this is so upsetting to me is because people with autism are constantly met with no resolutions, especially if you are someone on the high spectrum. I was told that I did not qualify for help and then the conversation that came out of me advocating for my struggles , was then used against me to prove that I did not qualify for a job, which even contradicts with the original point made by Michael. To be in such an important role , where someone is supposed to help and advocate for autistic people while causing damage is very concerning. I did speak to Michael , he was understanding, but I also don’t feel like he truly understands the error because he also communicated to me that he did not mean to “insult me” that he was “complimenting “ me and that statement leads me to believe that he truly does not see the harm that he and other people can place on autistic individuals lives. If I had not communicated to my peer supporter, I would’ve never found out that I did in fact qualify. He also still believes that he would’ve offered me a job if I did not tell him that I was someone who struggles with being on time. When this is a twist of my words and a slight manipulation of the original conversation, which makes me think I have experienced prejudicism AND ableism because I am a black woman who appears to be a highly functional autistic individual. Please do more research, and do not tell someone that they don’t qualify when it isn’t even your place and is a decision that is left to insurance and doctors. I no longer have interest in getting support here because I was shown quickly that they can not achieve such a goal. Thank you.

The Autism Society of Wilmington NC has the most amazing group of staff that I have ever met. My child has been a member for around 5 years, and I have never had one negative thing to say about anyone there. He has so much fun and feels so safe and supportive. We love everyone. Keep up the wonderful work guys!

ASNC of Wilmington has been such a great support for our son. He has attended for close to 10 years now. He enjoys his time spent with peers and the direct support staff between community events, social gatherings, and summer camp just to name a few. We highly recommend ASNC Wilmington to any person or family seeking assistance with Autism in their life.
