My son has been attending IOL for about 9 years. When he was first diagnosed as being neurodivergent, IOL was recommended as a safe place for him to learn social skills and emotional regulation. He continued that journey for several years. He has since moved to more specialized classes to continue to assist him in being a well rounded young adult. The thing that our family loves about IOL is the owner, Terrie, who is so amazing and informed in all that neurodivergent is. She is truly a great resource and her team is a reflection of the dedication to offering neurodivergent children and their families a safe and supportive environment. My son’s experiences with IOL have been excellent. I recommend IOL anytime I am able.
Great teachers! Very fun Friday night events. Highly recommend DnD night!
We’ve had an amazing experience with Inside Out Learners for reading tutoring for my son. Terrie has done an outstanding job prioritizing his individual needs and making sure he was matched with the right instructor — and Danielle has been exactly that. Her patience, skill, and ability to connect with him have made a real difference in his confidence and progress. We're so grateful for the personalized approach and the care they put into everything they do. Highly recommend!
Inside Out Learners is a great place for your child to expand their learning. We started taking our son there about 4 years ago when COVID-19 had the schools shut down. He was was 6 during the pandemic and his reading and comprehension stalled when the kids had to do virtual school. We worked with him at home with the assignments, we read to him or had him read to us at bedtime every single night, we checked his work on the chromebook, and we gave him home assignments and flash cards to use. After all of that, he was still reading below grade level. So we enrolled him at Inside Out Learners in Chesapeake, Virginia, VA. We heard about it through word of mouth. We looked the place up and it had good ratings. We have to travel over 30 minutes to get there, but it has been well worth it. We chat with the tutor after almost every session (twice a week) so that we can follow up on every assignment. Within a few months, we saw positive results. Within 12 months, he began reading at grade level. He still hated reading and was still embarrassed and frustrated by his reading and how long it was taking to finish assignments, but the progress was there. Even though he was at grade level reading by age 8, we decided to keep him there because you can't ever invest too much into your child's education (and they ain't cheap). Now at age 11, he is well above grade level. He is flourishing in all subjects. We can't be happier. We know our 17 year old daughter is college bound and now it's time to do whatever we can to get this young man prepared for his best life. As involved and dedicated as we are, Inside Out Learners has been a big part of our son's development over the last 4 years. I've noticed that they also tutor older or developmentally challenged kids as well. And these tutors are full time school teachers before they come to tutor. I don't know how many more years we'll take him there, but it has been well worth the investment and the time we've spent. 5 stars for Inside Out Learners!!!
I have a lot of experience with IOL. I am an autistic adult and attend the 30s and up group and it’s so amazing it’s like therapy!! The owner and staff are so accommodating and supportive, and love the non judgement it definitely feels like a safe place! My daughter who is also on the spectrum AudHD comes here too and loves it. She gets to play dungeons and dragons while learning social and coping skills and techniques. This is a great place to go and be yourself and not worry about masking because everyone is loved supported and doesn’t judge here. I very very highly recommend them!! They have helped me and my daughter a lot and we’ve even made friends a long the way. So thankful to this safe place!!
My son attends the young adult socials, and LOVES it! Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Great place!
We've had a great experience at Inside Out Learners!! Our daughter (age 12, Autism-level 1) has been in their 'Social Skills group' for a few years now. She has participated in some of their social clubs, such as a Minecraft group, a Roblox group, and an anime group. She has tried out their Dungeons & Dragons group as well. She has attended many of their 'tweens night out' events...and even enjoys inviting her 'neurotypical' friends!! She has made a lot of great progress since she started attending their programs. In fact, this year, during a vacation to see our extended family, many of our relatives commented on how much more 'mature' she acted- showing better eye contact, engaging in conversations, asking questions about others. We appreciate all that they do to help our girl navigate the social world!!
We heard about Inside Out Learners from a friends recommendation. Our daughter is 9 going on 15 and she LOVES attending their Tween's Night Out and Game Nights. She's been to a few of these social events and always asks to come back for more. She also recently started with private tutoring and loves her tutor Brittany, who is incredibly talented, patient, and positive. Miss Terrie and all the teachers are just wonderful with the kids, caring, encouraging, and accepting. I'm really impressed with how creative and adaptive they are with their tutoring strategies (teaching me some good tricks too!) and I love how they help kids and adults build social skills. I highly recommend them!
Our family has been with Terrie Livingston and Inside Outside Learners for approximately three years now and we appreciate her so very much! She is an invaluable member of my grandson's academic team. Terrie and her team of teachers are all licensed and accredited by the Virginia Department of Education. More importantly, they totally 'get' our neurodiverse kids. The genuine care and concern Terrie has for her students' academic success is evidenced by the abundance of patience she has when working with them to ensure they have mastered material before moving on. My grandson's literacy progress over the past three years can be directly attributed to her. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND Terrie and Inside Out Learners!
