I called PEAK on Feb 10 regarding an Independent Educational Evaluation for my son, after my email on February 6th says to call. Debbie, the office manager, expressed concern about my insurance carrier (irrelevant, as the school district pays for IEEs) and said she would call me back after speaking with their psychologist. She mentioned they were booking into early April. After 7 days of no contact, I called back on Feb 17. Debbie said I was "on her to-do list" but still needed to speak with the psychologist, who would be available after 12pm. I waited all day. No call. During the second call, I disclosed that I am on disability and explained how difficult it is for me to manage these communications due to executive dysfunction. I became emotional describing the toll this was taking. Debbie heard all of this. The next day (Feb 18), I received an impersonal email rejection stating they "don't take IEE cases at this time." This information could have been provided on day one. As a parent on disability for the same conditions they evaluate in children, the lack of understanding is particularly troubling. For a practice specializing in psychological evaluations, the failure to recognize how their communication impacts disabled parents is appalling. Eight days of false hope during a time-sensitive evaluation period is not just unprofessional—it's harmful. I finally moved into my second choice of evaluators who was responsive and helpful. Looking back, I realize the "concerns" about insurance and the distant April timeline were passive-aggressive ways of saying no without saying no. I wish I had recognized this sooner and contacted my second choice sooner. If you're a disabled parent seeking services, be prepared for poor communication and a lack of accommodations. Experiences like this make it harder for parents like me to feel safe seeking help.
