My son stopped attending Treasure Coast ABA (TCABA) on October 4, 2023, primarily due to their failure to manage billing properly. Although he was covered by state-funded health insurance while attending TCABA, we briefly enrolled him in a private insurance plan when we thought his state-funded insurance would be deactivated. We communicated this situation openly with TCABA’s clinical manager and directors, as well as with representatives from Missing Pieces ABA Billing & Consulting. Despite having dual insurance coverage, our son’s ABA services were not billed until a year later. The billing department did not handle the process in a timely manner. I followed all their advice to assist in resolving the issues, including contacting his private insurance company to inquire about billing procedures, clarifying certain codes on his Explanation of Benefits (EOB), requesting denial letters, and more. I even asked his primary insurance to deny all ABA services and disenroll him from coverage so that his state-funded insurance could cover the costs. When this did not resolve the billing issues, my husband and I decided to withdraw our son from TCABA. Fast forward to early December 2024; I received a final notice invoice in the mail from TCABA for $3,000, which had been forwarded to our new address. It is important to note that my son had not attended this center for over a year and was thriving at his new school with a new Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). Therefore, this invoice was a complete shock to us. The letter threatened to send the bill to a collection agency if we did not pay for charges dating back as far as May 31, 2024. On December 13, 2024, I emailed TCABA, called, and left a voicemail providing the necessary information to bill his state-funded health insurance for any remaining balance. Unfortunately, I never received a callback or email response. In January 2025, I began receiving calls, texts, and emails from Snap Debt Recovery, a collection agency, threatening to negatively affect my credit and wages if I did not settle the debt within 35 days. As a result, I filed a grievance and complaint with his state-funded insurance and submitted screenshots of the calls, texts, emails, and documents from TCABA. These documents demonstrated that they were fully aware of his state-funded insurance coverage during his time at the center, yet they chose to bill us for a remaining balance well over a year after our son left. Fortunately, we were eventually successful in our grievance and complaint with the assistance of our son’s state-funded insurance company, which advocated on our behalf to have the debt removed from collections. This entire ordeal caused us significant stress and anxiety. I want to inform prospective clients about how business is being handled at this facility.
Many years of great support for my children and many other families
When my son first visited Treasure Coast ABA, it was a good center. His BCBA was fantastic and we had a good plan in place. It was everything I had hoped for. My son was doing well and improved drastically! I was so happy. Fast forward to today and this place is a LONG way from what it used to be. I am going to share my experiences here because I don't want this to come across as a bitter post so I WILL provide specifics. I am disappointed that I am here but honestly, once my son reached school age and switched from Medicaid, everything changed. 1. His first BCBA left and everything went downhill from there. He had a different BCBA every year (because they kept leaving) and the communication and consistency of his plans was affected by this. The communication on the change of BCBA was not great either. In ALL instances I had to follow up on who that person was and reach out to THEM. 2. He was assigned to another BCBA from their Port St Lucie center who was much better. However, they could never get the staffing in place to open the Port St Lucie center so they switched him to in-home care. They were only able to visit him once a week (though his plan recommends 3 visits a week) due to capacity. This is not the BCBA's fault, this is lack of management on the center's part. 3. For the 2023-2024 school year, I signed the district form to have the RBT or BCBA visit his school to work with the teacher. His teacher confirmed that the form was never submitted during our IEP meeting and no one went to the school. The teacher was also familiar with this center and confirmed our child was not the only one with the same problem. for the 2024-2025 school year, I did not sign the form as no plan was put in place for his treatment. 4. Accounts Payable (and our current problem). If you have Medicaid there is no problem, but when we switched to our private insurance, they became completely unorganized. I spoke to the accounts payable rep many times advising her that I was issuing payments from our Health Saving's Account and that our statements needed to be updated with those payments. They returned some of the checks they were receiving because they did not know what to do with them. Fast forward to today, our statements STILL don't show the payments they cashed from our HSA, and they then referred our account to collections. I spoke to the collections rep asking for an updated statement with the posted payments and they STILL did not provide to them. They have cashed over $2,000 in payments and have yet to show me how they were applied. I hope the owner sees this because I was very hesitant to post this and I usually only do this when there is A LOT of factors to consider. I would be more than happy to talk through this with anyone who cares to listen. I am very disappointed and defeated given ABA resources in the treasure coast are limited as it is.
