AmeriHealth Caritas is one of the largest Medicaid managed care organizations in the United States, covering millions of low-income children and families across more than a dozen states. If your family receives Medicaid through AmeriHealth Caritas, you may be wondering: does AmeriHealth Caritas cover ABA therapy for autism?
The answer is yes, but with important state-by-state differences. Here is what families need to know about accessing ABA therapy through AmeriHealth Caritas in 2026.
What Is AmeriHealth Caritas?
AmeriHealth Caritas is not the same as AmeriHealth, the commercial insurance company. AmeriHealth Caritas is a separate, Medicaid-focused managed care organization that exists specifically to manage Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) benefits for low-income families through state Medicaid programs.
In each state where it operates, AmeriHealth Caritas contracts with the state government to administer Medicaid benefits for enrolled members. The specific coverage rules, benefit limits, and prior authorization requirements can vary from state to state, because each state Medicaid program sets its own rules within federal guidelines.
Which States Does AmeriHealth Caritas Cover?
According to the company's own national footprint page, AmeriHealth Caritas runs Medicaid and other managed care plans in these states and the District of Columbia:
- Delaware (AmeriHealth Caritas Delaware)
- District of Columbia (AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia)
- Louisiana (AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana)
- Michigan (Blue Cross Complete of Michigan)
- New Hampshire (AmeriHealth Caritas New Hampshire)
- North Carolina (AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina)
- Ohio (AmeriHealth Caritas Ohio)
- Pennsylvania (AmeriHealth Caritas Pennsylvania and Keystone First)
- South Carolina (First Choice by Select Health of South Carolina)
The same footprint page shows other AmeriHealth Caritas business lines, including marketplace plans, Medicare plans and pharmacy services, operating in additional states such as California, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri and New Jersey. Those are not the same product as a state Medicaid plan, so the name on your card matters. Check your Medicaid card or your state Medicaid enrollment letter to confirm your plan name.
Does AmeriHealth Caritas Cover ABA Therapy?
Yes. AmeriHealth Caritas covers Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) across all of its state plans. The therapy must be considered medically necessary and prescribed or recommended by a licensed healthcare provider.
Coverage typically includes:
- Comprehensive ABA assessments, including initial evaluation and ongoing functional behavior assessments
- Direct ABA therapy sessions, including therapy delivered by a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) under BCBA supervision
- Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) supervision visits
- In-home ABA therapy
- Clinic or center-based ABA therapy
- School-based ABA support
- Parent and caregiver training
What Is the Age Limit for ABA Coverage Under AmeriHealth Caritas?
AmeriHealth Caritas, like all Medicaid managed care plans, must comply with the federal EPSDT (Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment) requirement. Under EPSDT, Medicaid must cover all medically necessary services for children and youth under age 21, which means there is no arbitrary age cutoff for ABA therapy for Medicaid members under 21. CMS's 2026 EPSDT guide for states adds that flat or arbitrary limits, including rigid visit or hour caps and fixed cutoffs, cannot substitute for an individualized medical necessity determination.
State Medicaid programs may set additional guidelines within this federal framework, so the practical scope of coverage can vary by state. North Carolina is the clearest recent example. House Bill 696, signed April 30, 2026 as Session Law 2026-1, directs the state to rewrite Clinical Coverage Policy 8F so that any ABA service plan involving more than 16 hours of services per week must be approved by the managed care plan or the Department, and updated and reapproved every month. The same law bars Board Certified Behavior Analysts and Qualified Autism Services Practitioner Supervisors from enrolling in North Carolina Medicaid as out-of-state providers.
Does AmeriHealth Caritas Require Prior Authorization for ABA?
Yes. Like all Medicaid managed care plans, AmeriHealth Caritas requires prior authorization before ABA therapy begins and at regular intervals for continued services, typically every 6 to 12 months. Your ABA provider handles the authorization process on your behalf, but it requires the following to be submitted:
- A formal ASD diagnosis from a licensed physician or psychologist
- A written ABA treatment plan from a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)
- Documentation that ABA therapy is medically necessary for your child
Authorization requests are typically reviewed within a few business days to two weeks. Your provider should submit the authorization request well before your child's therapy start date to avoid gaps in care.
Is There a Limit on ABA Therapy Hours Under AmeriHealth Caritas?
Because AmeriHealth Caritas must follow EPSDT rules for members under 21, there is no fixed annual cap on ABA therapy hours. Coverage is based on medical necessity as determined by your child's BCBA and the plan's clinical reviewers. AmeriHealth Caritas reviews treatment plans at each authorization period and may adjust approved hours based on your child's progress and the treatment documentation provided.
If AmeriHealth Caritas reduces or denies your child's authorized ABA hours, you have the right to appeal. Your ABA provider can assist with this process and submit additional clinical documentation to support the request.
Does AmeriHealth Caritas Cover Telehealth ABA Therapy?
Telehealth ABA coverage through AmeriHealth Caritas varies by state and has been evolving in 2026. Some states have restricted telehealth for certain ABA billing codes, while others have expanded it. South Carolina, where AmeriHealth Caritas operates as First Choice, is a good example. The SCDHHS Autism Spectrum Disorder Services Provider Manual dated July 1, 2026 states that the Behavior Identification Assessment (CPT 97151) "cannot be completed via telehealth," and that Adaptive Behavior Treatment with Protocol Modification (CPT 97155) "will not be reimbursed through telehealth on a routine basis and not without prior authorization."
Contact the member services number on your AmeriHealth Caritas card or ask your ABA provider to confirm what telehealth ABA services are covered in your specific state plan.
AmeriHealth Caritas vs. AmeriHealth (Commercial Insurance): What Is the Difference?
This is one of the most common points of confusion for families. AmeriHealth Caritas and AmeriHealth are separate companies with different products:
- AmeriHealth Caritas is a Medicaid managed care organization. It serves low-income families enrolled in state Medicaid programs. If you receive Medicaid and live in one of the states listed above, you may have AmeriHealth Caritas.
- AmeriHealth (such as AmeriHealth New Jersey or AmeriHealth PA) is a commercial health insurance company, a subsidiary of Independence Blue Cross. It sells employer-sponsored and individual market plans, not Medicaid.
When you call to verify your ABA therapy coverage, confirm whether you have AmeriHealth Caritas (Medicaid) or AmeriHealth (commercial), as coverage rules and provider networks differ between the two.
How to Find an In-Network ABA Provider Under AmeriHealth Caritas
AmeriHealth Caritas coverage is only available from in-network providers. Going out of network for ABA therapy on Medicaid typically means no coverage at all. To find an in-network ABA provider:
- Call the member services number on your AmeriHealth Caritas Medicaid card and request a list of in-network ABA providers in your county
- Use the provider directory on AmeriHealth Caritas's state-specific website (search for your state plan by name, such as AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina or AmeriHealth Caritas Pennsylvania)
- Search the ABA Navigator directory and call providers to confirm they accept AmeriHealth Caritas in your state
- Ask each provider directly whether they are credentialed with AmeriHealth Caritas and accepting new Medicaid patients
What to Do If AmeriHealth Caritas Denies ABA Therapy
A denial is not the end of the road. Families have several options:
- Internal appeal: Request that AmeriHealth Caritas review the denial. Submit additional clinical documentation from your child's BCBA or physician explaining why ABA therapy is medically necessary.
- External independent review: If the internal appeal fails, request an independent medical review by a third party outside the plan.
- Medicaid fair hearing: Request a state Medicaid fair hearing. Under 42 CFR 438.408, states must allow at least 90 and no more than 120 calendar days from the plan's notice of resolution to request one. Separately, 42 CFR 438.420 lets you keep the disputed services in place during the appeal if you file for continuation of benefits on or before the later of 10 calendar days from the notice, or the intended effective date of the change.
- State insurance regulator complaint: File a complaint with your state's Department of Insurance if you believe the denial violates mental health parity laws or Medicaid coverage requirements.
- Disability rights organizations: Contact your state's protection and advocacy organization for free legal assistance with ABA coverage denials.
